Location
Quepos is located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica at about 180 kilometers from San Jose. The Quepos airport offers daily flights to San Jose. Quepos used to be an important banana harbor. When the banana companies switched to African Palms in anticipation of a banana disease that was damaging banana crops in Panama, the harbor activity declined sharply, since the processed product (palm oil) is much less bulky than bananas. After years of decline, Quepos is now becoming a more prosperous town with tourism as its main industry.
Amenities
In Quepos you can find pretty much everything you need; fairly large supermarkets, hardware stores, banks, excellent restaurants (the specialty of most is, non-surprisingly, fish and seafood, and most menus offer the "catch of the day"). Quepos has its own hospital and there are several pharmacies and internet cafes. At night the Banco Bar offers cold drinks and diversion, and in the weekends you can go dancing either in the Arco Iris Discotheque in Quepos, or on one of the beach parties in Manuel Antonio.
Attractions
Quepos is a sport fishing paradise, and it is said that a bad day of fishing in Costa Rica is still better than a good day in most other places. Besides the fishing, the small village of Manuel Antonio, just a few kilometers South of Quepos, is a nature lovers paradise. Sporting several gorgeous White sand beaches and jungle teeming with wildlife, of which especially the capuchin- and squirrel monkeys and sloths are very abundant, Manuel Antonio National Park is both Costa Rica's smallest and busiest National Park. All this beauty and fame have attracted a lot of development, though, and the road from Quepos to Manuel Antonio is literally lined by hotels. This makes both Quepos and Manuel Antonio a great place for people who like the combination of nature and a tourist town, where there is always something to do. For people who prefer a more relaxed and authentic Costa Rica, there are much better options further to the South, such as Dominical and Uvita.
